 Ground vegetation contributes substantially to the carbon uptake of forests
Northern pine forests play a significant role in carbon uptake. So far, research has largely focused on the role of trees, but many ground vegetation species are effective assimilators, as well.

 Saving babies by cell
The mobile phone has been developed into a weapon in the fight against child mortality. A research group is working on methods to give proper information to mothers in developing countries on the nutrition of small children.
 
 Summer courses offer intensive learning and international friendship
Summer School (HSS) attracts a large group of international students to Helsinki annually. Last summer, HSS offered 18 courses, with topics ranging from forestry and wood construction to genocide research.
 
 War separated the people from the forest
Southern Sudan has natural resources left despite the long-term civil war. The management of these resources is critical, and Southern Sudan and Finland are cooperating to improve it.

“Environmental problems cannot be solved by one discipline alone. Complexity of the issues at hand requires expertise and understanding of both natural phenomena and human behaviour. “I find it crucial to increase the understanding of the multidisciplinary aspect of the global environmental change”, says Janna Pietikäinen, coordinator of the multidisciplinary environmental study module. Read more »»
