Pharma goes digital: Prospects for the “Medicine-as-a-Service” paradigm

Public lecture by Dr. Jody Ranck
Time: Monday 20th of April, at 10.

Venue: Biomedicum 1, lecture hall 3.

Abstract

The pharmaceutical and life sciences industry is in the early days of a major transformation of business models. The end of the blockbuster drug era, generic medications, chronic diseases and the shift to value-based care for reimbursements means pharmaceutical companies must adapt to a radically changing environment in the coming years.

While historically risk averse, pharma is now beginning to embrace the digital health era. The first wave of digital health experiments in pharma were more direct to consumer marketing apps but robust digital health platforms will be the future. This new paradigm, characterized as “Medicine-as-a-Service” will no longer have the medication as the sole focus, but rather look for ways to leverage deep data analytics capabilities, risk management and relationships with doctors and patients into the next wave of digital health platforms for prevention and chronic disease management at a moment when the major technology platforms from Apple to Google are also entering the picture.

We may see new configurations of technologies, platforms and business models that offer new alignments of cooperation and competition in the coming years.
