Climate & Death 2024 is a transdisciplinary seminar that invites participants from different disciplines and fields to discuss the intersections between climate and death. The event provides a platform to discuss emerging issues related to the topic from perspectives of research, projects, or artistic contributions (or other) in a friendly atmosphere.

Climate & Death 2024 is organized by the Safer Climate network (Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research, University of Helsinki), the Finnish Death Studies Association, Artists with Evidence and Tunne ry. The event is part of the 3rd ACCC Impact Week.

The questions connecting climate and death are emerging from various interdisciplinary fields such as thanatology (death studies), sustainability science, climate change and air quality research, environmental studies, post-humanist, Indigenous and feminist scholarship, and many others. At the same time, several artists and civil society organizations are working with related issues and connecting their work to the themes of loss, grief and other emotions, also through participatory and experiential methods. Topics for discussion and presentations include for example:

• connections of climate change to human mortality, health and wellbeing, including mental health and psychosocial support
• multispecies, non-human and environmental perspectives to death, dying and mortality
• transdisciplinary and artistic methods as ways to understand climate and death related themes
• inclusive, queer and indigenous perspectives on climate and death
• dealing with death, loss and grief related to climate change, biodiversity loss, environmental destruction
• links between climate change and air quality in relation to climate and death
• security, peace and conflicts in relation to climate and death
• understanding links between climate change and unsustainable, unjust systems: how to move forward from ‘dying’ systems?

The seminar will be accompanied by an evening with an art-science program, curated by Artists with Evidence, that will take place in the city center of Helsinki, during the same week. The program will focus on multidisciplinary approaches and youth perspectives. More info will follow later.

The event is open and free for all interested, registration required.
