From countering pandemics to combating climate change, decisions affecting the globe and the lives of many of its inhabitants are increasingly made by technocratic experts in private or public international institutions, often with little public scrutiny or accountability. This poses serious questions on the legitimacy and democracy of global governance. Should those affected by the technocratic decisions made as part of the daily activities of global governance have a say in the decision-making process? Are the current international organizations fit for the task? How should they be reformed and what avenues are there to increase the democracy of global governance? This event will discuss these questions by zooming in expert decision-making in global health, international organizations law, and solar geoengineering.
Speaker Bios:
Nicole Hassoun is Core Fellow at the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies, Professor at Binghamton University, and utive director of the Global Health Impact Organization (https://www.global-health-impact.org/). She has held visiting positions at Cornell University, the United Nations World Institute for Development Economics Research, the Center for Poverty Research in Austria, the Center for Advanced Studies in Frankfurt and else. She is the author of Global Health Impact (Oxford University Press, 2020) and Globalization and Global Justice (Cambridge University Press, 2012) and has published widely in philosophy, economics, and public health.
Jan Klabbers is Professor of international law at the University of Helsinki. He has authored a number of monographs and is well-known for his user-friendly textbooks International Law (4th edition, 2023) and An Introduction to the Law of International Organizations (4th edition, CUP 2022). He has held invited visiting positions at, amongst others, New York University, Sorbonne, and the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies.
David Schlosberg is the 2024 Erkko Visiting Professor of Studies in Contemporary Society at the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies, and Director of the Sydney Environment Institute and Professor of Environmental Politics at the University of Sydney. Schlosberg’s main theoretical interests are in environmental politics, environmental movements, and political theory, and in particular the intersection of the three with his groundbreaking work on environmental, ecological, and multispecies justice. His other theoretical interests are in climate justice, climate adaptation and resilience, and environmental movements and the practices of everyday life. Professor Schlosberg’s more applied work includes justice in adaptation and resilience planning, community-based food movements and policy, and community-based responses to climate disasters.
Ukri Soirila is an Assistant Professor of International Law at the University of Helsinki. He is the author of The Law of Humanity Project: A Story of International Law Reform and State—making (Hart Publishing 2021), as well as articles on international law, human rights, law and political economy, and legal theory, usually from a critical perspective. His current research focuses on the market activitied of international organizations.
