The EU’s biodiversity strategy aims to put an end to biodiversity loss and step onto the path of recovery by 2030. Beside 16 other targets, member states have committed to strictly protect a minimum of one third of the EU’s protected areas, including all remaining primary and old-growth forests. Member countries are required to draw up their own plans for achieving these goals, in which, along with protection of land and water areas, restoration of various habitats is also underscored.
In Finland, the discussion about biodiversity has largely revolved around forests, and especially primary and old-growth forests.
What is the state of the environment in Europe? What are the implications of the European Union’s biodiversity strategy for Europe and Finland? How to save old forests? We explore these questions during the spring at the ECOENV seminars.
This seminars presentation, entitled A forest is more than just a collection of trees will be held by Research Professor Liisa Tyrväinen, Natural Resources Institute Finland (LUKE).
The seminar series is organized by the Ecosystems and Environment Research Programme, chaired by Hannele Pokka, Professor of Practice in Environmental Responsibility. The events are open to everyone interested.
